The Celts in olden times believed that the Tree of Life had special powers and these trees were a large part of their spiritual and daily lives. While clearing land it was common to leave a large tree, usually an oak, in the center. This tree was the Crann na Beatha. The area under this tree would be used for gatherings as well as to provide shelter, warmth and food. The Celtic people had a mystical belief too in that the roots of the oak were the doorways to the enchanted world of the Fairy.
There are more interpretations for the meaning of the Tree of Life – it has become a metaphor for ancestral descent and the honoring of that lineage – the branches of the family and their roots of tradition. In addition it symbolizes strength, protection, wisdom and longevity.
