The Claddagh is a very romantic symbol dating back to the 16th century in Ireland. Richard Joyce designed the ring to celebrate the love of his life. The features of the symbol – the heart, hands and crown – represent love, friendship and loyalty. Tradition decrees that if your heart is given to another you must wear the ring so that the bottom of the heart faces your own. If your heart is still free you must wear it pointing outwards. Historically the Claddagh ring has been a betrothal and subsequent wedding ring. Today the Claddagh ring has also come to be worn as a friendship ring.
